Founded in 1881, it was originally part of Dedham, Massachusetts. It was named after Henry Wellesley, the brother of the Duke of Wellington. Wellesley has been a residential community since its founding, with many homes built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It also has a number of educational institutions, including Wellesley College, which was founded in 1870.

It is also home to several prestigious institutions, including Wellesley College and Babson College. The climate in Wellesley is mild and temperate, with cold but cozy winters and warm, luxurious summers. Snowfall is expected in the winter, but the town rarely sees extreme weather conditions.
